Our Story

Every business starts with a simple question.

For the Policygenius founders, that question was: “Why is buying insurance such a frustrating experience?

Frustrating is an understatement. Navigating the world of insurance is confusing, stressful and a step backward in time (hello, fax machines). And even after they’ve bought a policy, people worry they might still be on the hook for something they missed.

Let’s get real: insurance has a big consumer problem.

As consultants to the top insurance companies, we suspected that this consumer problem was behind a lot of things we observed. It’s why life insurance ownership is at a 50-year low. It’s why health and disability under-insurance is behind most personal bankruptcies and home foreclosures. And it’s why we started Policygenius.

First principles: insurance will probably never be fun for the consumer. But it can be easier and inspire confidence.

We have a lot of insurance knowledge, but we put that aside and started with a clean sheet. What’s the easiest way to get an individual from point A (no insurance) to point B (insured)? What kind of experience would people want? And we built from there.

How are we different from other insurance sites?

Many insurance sites simply capture your information (like a request for a quote) and sell that to multiple insurance brokers/agents who’ll try to sell you. We don’t do that. If you want insurance, we work with you personally.

Many insurance sites fail to prioritize user experience. They don’t make it easy to research, compare and/or apply for the coverage you need.  

We aim to deliver a great shopping experience. We have devoted ourselves to designing a user-friendly site, we have created helpful tools for your shopping experience, and have even written informational articles and reviews. PoliSea is your one stop shop for life insurance.

Are we affiliated with any insurance companies?

No—we are an independent life insurance broker. That means we can offer insurance products from several different companies.

Many companies have “captive” agents, who only offer products from their specific insurance company. We don’t.

We prefer to provide you with an unbiased range of options from all of the top life insurance carriers, so that you no longer have to “shop around” in multiple places, just one.

Are we licensed?

Yes—all insurance brokers are required by law to be licensed in each state they do business. You can find our licenses here.

Can we get you a cheaper price for insurance?

No—but neither can anyone else. Insurance rate tables and premiums are filed with and regulated by your state’s department of insurance.

That means you pay the same price for a given insurance company’s product, wherever you buy it from.

However, where we can get you a better price is by offering products from multiple insurance companies. One company might have more competitive pricing for your particular case; that’s the advantage of working through an independent broker.

How do we choose which insurance companies to work with?

First, we only consider insurance companies that are reputable and have sound financial ratings. After that, we select based on the ease of doing business with them. That means, we work with companies that:

  • Will work through an independent broker
  • Are comfortable with our online-based model of engaging with customers
  • Make it easy for us to provide a great shopping experience to our customers (e.g., by providing access to real-time quoting, accepting electronic applications, etc.)

How do we make money?

As an insurance broker, we get paid a commission by insurance companies for each sale. Insurance commissions are already baked into the price of an insurance policy, so you’re not paying any extra for using our service (or any broker’s service for that matter).
